OPAL CARE

Opals are one of the softer gemstones but with proper care, can last a lifetime. To ensure the life of your opal please take care of it with our helpful suggestions:

  • If there is a chance your opal jewellery may be scratched for example, during housework, gardening and so forth please remove your jewellery.

  • If wearing an opal ring please keep in mind any hard surfaces which may scratch or damage the stone e.g. when knocking on doors.

  • Opals contain about 5-6% of water and may crack if exposed to very dry conditions or a dramatic change in temperature avoid wearing your opals in these environments e.g. wearing opals in the sauna or near steam.

  • For doublets or triplets, as they are layered opals, avoid exposure to water including showering, swimming or washing hands as this can damage the stone.

  • When storing your opal just place it in a pouch or padded box near a damp cloth so that your opal does not dry out or crack.

  • Clean the surface of your opal with a soft dry cloth without any chemicals.

  • Only solid opals should be wiped from time to time with water that is room temperature.

pearl CARE

With a little love and care, your pearl can remain beautiful for many years to come. Please read the following suggestions for taking care of your pearls:

  • Very dry or hot conditions can damage pearls so please avoid these environments e.g. do not place pearls on surfaces near heaters or air conditioners.

  • Please put on cosmetics, lotions or perfumes and allow them to dry before wearing your pearl jewellery as these products can damage the surface lustre of the pearl, If wearing sunscreen, it is best not to wear your pearls as the sunscreen often rubs off onto the pearl unlike other skin creams.

  • After wearing your pearls, wipe with a soft damp cloth to clean any traces of cosmetics. No chemicals or detergents are required just use lukewarm water.

  • Due to a pearl's low hardness, please avoid storing them with other gemstones as they may scratch the surface of the pearl. As such do not wear pearl jewellery during heavy work and ensure they are kept away from contact with hard surfaces.

  • With pearl strands, please have your jeweller restring your pearls occasionally, especially if you wear them often. Make sure they are knotted individually so that you do not lose all your pearls should the strand break.

  • To ensure the continued life of the pearl it is best to take them off before showering or swimming as repeated exposure or submersion in water can loosen the setting.

  • When removing your pearl ring, try to grasp it with the shank or the setting rather than the pearl.
